This is a collaborative thread to give an indication of paint depths in cars from the factory (or as close to factory as possible)

Please post your findings below and we will start getting a list together. Please try to avoid cluttering the thread with questions etc. Would like to try to keep it to specific posts of paint depths

When posting, please use the following format:

    Make: xxxx
    Model: xxxx
    Year: xxxx
Average Paint Depth range (Microns): xxx - xxx
    Paint Type: CoB or SS

NOTE: This is intended as a basic guide only and based on the experiences of members here. Detail Paradise, nor the members contributing to it are not responsible for damage incurred on vehicles whilst using this thread as a guide.

Hey Dan should we also have a spot to record what would be considered the low reading that you would touch?

    Cars added.

Re the low reading, do you reckon that would change drastically from car to car though?

I tend to excercise caution when sub 100, extreme caution when sub 90, and tend not to really want to touch areas that are sub 80. Or is this too general you think?

Also, maybe we need to add a field which specifies Single Stage Paint (SS), or Clear over Base coat (CoB)? Thoughts?

I don't really have the experience to know if all makes have roughly the same amount of base coat.. I did a Mazda 3 that someone had been chasing really deep rids on the bonnet they had run out of clear in one spot I measured that at 80 microns ...I'm pretty sure the roof of my forester is at its limit at around 80 microns aswell .
I don't know how it works with single stage paint but I think it would be good to differentiate and maybe get some feedback on aswell...
I think the sponsors would benefit from this resource as people would be more likely to purchase a gauge if this info was available. IMO

If anyone can add 07 Mazda 6 and 2011 Mazda RX8 that would be brilliant.

dont know if anyone that takes a reading off a 2007 mazda would still be standing. If they are, they might still be trying to recalibrate their pdg. I had figure in the 80-90s on a "undetailed" mazda 3
